The second volume in the series "XXI. Artists' Guides", dedicated to Puglia, explores the region through the research of an artist from Bari, Fabrizio Bellomo. Recalling games of exploration from his own childhood, and following that example, his work has led him to scour the area's wastelands of solid and empty spaces, hollowed forms and residual structures which in the course of centuries generations of quarrymen have moulded, removing stones and emptying rock deposits to build elsewhere. In Bellomo's mind these same cavities and residual forms, resulting from centuries of tuff and Lecce stone quarrying, assume the status of open-air architectures which in the artist's imagination suggest the idea of creating a new stone environment to populate, the Villaggio Cavatrulli. A realisable utopia conceived as a sculptural synthesis of his extensive mapping of the region's quarry sites; an opportunity for the very process of extraction to become an architectural action planned in advance. The volume, in the form of a concertina book, features a selection of images collected by Bellomo during his travels through the region and includes a booklet with the artist's writings, works and reflections on the project.
