On the tracks of the Dalle Masegne brothers in Mantua: the cathedral façade and the Tomb monument of Margherita Malatesta

Stefano L’Occaso
A comprehensive analysis of documents regarding works carried out by Jacobello and Pietro Paolo Dalle Masegne in Mantua, mainly through the patronage of Francesco Gonzaga, then lord of the city, has led to new findings concerning their two major achievements: a new marble façade for the cathedral, decorated and topped with statues, and a tomb monument dedicated to Margherita Malatesta, Francesco's wife, erected in the church of San Francesco.
Marble statues and architectural elements are identified in a number of sites in Mantua (Castello di San Giorgio, church of San Leonardo, in particular an impressive Carrara marble 'Crucifix' formerly attributed to Jacopino da Tradate) and the surrounding area (Villa Saviola, San Benedetto Po, Sermide) are shown, or are here considered, to have originally belonged to these two works. Their attribution to the Dalle Masegne workshop is proposed here for the first time.
