The large and long-overlooked terracotta Crucifix in the apse of the church of Saint-Didier in Avignon is here identified as a fragment of the monumental Calvary executed in 1504 by Pietro Torrigiani for the sacristy of the city's Franciscan church, known as the Cordeliers, commissioned by the Baroncelli family. A second Crucifix, carved in wood and stucco and located in the church of San Domenico in Gubbio, can likewise be attributed to Torrigiani. The study of these works provides an opportunity to reassess the sculptor's oeuvre and reflect on the artistic models that shaped his early activity.
