Titianesque portrait of Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga

Stefano L’Occaso
This paper concerns a 'Portrait of Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga' in Munich, Residenz (Grüne Galerie), here attributed to Titian and his workshop. Vasari's assertion that Titian portrayed the cardinal, who for many years led the religious, political and artistic life of the Duchy of Mantua, is thus corroborated, even if the chronology apparently suggested by Vasari fails to tally with the date now proposed for the painting: ca. 1550. Unfortunately, the painting is not in good condition, although it does allow the author to discuss in detail other extant portraits representing the cardinal.
