Bernini the painter: the reappearance of the Costa ‘Portrait of a Young Man'

The author presents a painting that in 1951 was published by Luigi Grassi as an autograph work by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, after which it received no further scholarly attention, having never been photographed in colour, and never exhibited. Examination of the work has made it possible to confirm the attribution to Bernini and date the work to around 1635, that is, at the time of the artist's greatest affinity with the painting of Diego Velázquez.
