On the relations between Faliscan ceramics and the Clusium Group through the study of ornitomorphic askoi

Laura Ambrosini
The connections between Faliscan red-figure pottery and the 'Clusium Group' vases, so far investigated only through the vase shape of the kylix, are now analyzed through another vase shape – the ornithomorphic askos. Here grouped together for the first time are some ornithomorphic black-gloss askoi with overpainted decoration, or with simple white engobe and colourful touches or in red-figure technique with some parts in relief. These askoi, belonging to the 'Group of ornithomorphic askoi' (divided into subgroups A-D), in the shape of roosters, jackdaws, pigeons and doves, allow us to demonstrate that this production, which arose in the Ager Faliscus, through the mediation of Volsinii, was also widespread in Clusium. In this city, the production gave rise to the well-known red-figure duck-askoi of the 'Clusium Group'. The decorations on some askoi of the 'Group of ornithomorphic askoi' could refer simultaneously to both the erotic/nuptial and funeral spheres: the content might well have been used both in the preparation of the bride for her wedding and in that of the body before the funeral ceremony. The production of the 'Group of ornithomorphic askoi' can be dated to the beginning of the last quarter of the 4th century BC (ca. 320 BC).
