Max Seidel and Serena Calamai's recent book on Ambrogio Lorenzetti's 'Purification of the Virgin' contains a wealth of thought-provoking insights. The painting is subjected to a multifocal analysis, following a methodological approach previously employed by Seidel in one of his most significant works, Father and Son. The importance of the artwork under examination, coupled with the broad scope of the authors' investigation, go beyond the confines of a monograph, offering an opportunity to reflect on critical aspects of Ambrogio Lorenzetti's art. Building upon some of these insights, the study focuses on the interplay between textual sources and iconographic choices in Ambrogio's works, his relationship with pictorial models, and his engagement with contemporary Sienese goldsmithing.
